Carol has worked at the hotel part time during her studies at the University and found the job through the University’s JobShop, a service provided by the Students’ Union to help students find part time work to support them whilst they are studying.

“Carol’s passion for the hotel comes through in everything she does. Her previous experience in working in larger hotels has meant that the sharing of knowledge has worked both ways and we have learnt much from her,” said Mrs and Mrs Reynolds.

“This was such a huge surprise for me, I am thrilled at the prospect of going further, however I am exceptionally pleased that I have got this far. Its opportunities and recognition such as this which really make my job worthwhile and will enhance my future prospects,” said Carol.

Jo Evans, JobShop Coordinator said: “This is the first year that our service has participated in the Student Employee of the Year competition and we are thrilled to have one of our students in the national final. Part-time work is such a huge part of the student experience and it is fantastic to see the amazing contribution students make being recognised.”

The Student Employee of the Year Awards aim to recognise and promote the outstanding contributions and achievements of students who effectively combine part-time work with their study commitments. It is coordinated on an annual basis by the National Association of Student Employment Services.

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2010

Cheltenham National Hunt Racing Festival Dates 16th March – 19th March 2010

The Festival runs from 16th to 19th March and builds up to the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday 19th. Don’t miss one of the highlights of the sporting calendar.

The 26 races that make up the Cheltenham Festival are the most hotly contested of the entire racing calendar, with around 500 horses competing for in excess of £3.4 million of win and place prize money.

Whatever the weather, spring arrives in Gloucestershire on the first Tuesday of the Festival. Helicopters clatter in over Cleeve Hill, the first of 200,000 pints of Guinness are sunk and spectators roar off the start of the first race at the Festival. That now traditional roar is an outpouring of a range of emotions from the relief of the racing community that Cheltenham has finally come round again, to the exhilaration of the crowd at the thought of what lies ahead – four days of high drama, effort and excess.

The week climaxes with the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday, while other highlights include Tuesday’s Champion Hurdle, Wednesday’s Queen Mother Champion Chase and the World Hurdle on Thursday.

FESTIVAL HISTORY
In 1996 Cheltenham Folk Club organiser John Shorter approached Cheltenham Town Hall with the idea of a mid-winter folk event to “banish the winter blues”. He wanted to produce an event that preserved the roots of Folk tradition, showcased budding new talent, and created a friendly atmosphere.

The festival has a very strong participatory side to it, with a wide range of workshops, where you can learn the techniques behind various instruments and musical styles from the performers themselves. As well as the broad range of concerts, workshops, ceilidhs and children’s activities there is a market place with stalls selling everything from jewellery and clothing to musical instruments, as well as the infamous Real Ale bar.

Over the weekend, the town turns in to a feast of colour and energy as up to 15 morris dance sides take to the streets on the Saturday and Sunday.
